At Emily Howard Training, we understand the importance of fostering a positive and supportive environment for students, while also recognising the role parents play in a child’s dance education. Parent involvement can help reinforce the learning process and provide valuable encouragement. However, in order to maintain the focus and integrity of the class, we have set guidelines regarding parent viewing that help create the best possible learning atmosphere for our students.
For students aged 4 and older, we have a policy in place that parents are not permitted to watch the classes on a regular basis. This policy is designed to help students develop independence, concentrate on their own work, and foster a sense of discipline. Young dancers can sometimes become distracted by the presence of their parents during class, which can interrupt their focus and hinder their progress. By not having parents present during every lesson, we allow students to engage more fully with the instructor and their peers, which promotes a more productive and effective learning environment. It also helps them to develop self-confidence, as they learn to rely on their own abilities rather than looking to their parents for validation or support during the class.
Parent viewing will be offered when necessary, such as during special events, performances, or observation weeks. These designated times give parents the opportunity to see their child’s progress in a structured, focused setting, without disrupting the flow of regular lessons. For example, we may host parent viewing days where parents can watch their child's class to see how they are developing their skills, or after a performance or recital, parents may be invited to watch a class to see what their child has been working on. These events give parents an opportunity to connect with teachers and understand more about the dance training their child is receiving, but they are structured in a way that does not interfere with the students’ progress or the quality of their learning experience.
In the case of private lessons, parents may be permitted to observe the class, but only with the teacher's prior permission. Private lessons often focus on refining technique and working through specific challenges, and it is essential that the student feels at ease and able to communicate openly with their teacher. Sometimes, the presence of a parent can create additional pressure or distraction. Therefore, we ask that parents understand the importance of respecting the teacher’s discretion regarding private lesson observation. If a parent is allowed to observe, they should remain quiet, avoid interrupting the class, and respect the teacher’s and student’s space during the session.
Our parent viewing policy also extends to our online platforms. In cases where classes are being live-streamed or recorded for any reason, we will ensure that proper guidelines are in place to ensure the privacy of all students and instructors. Access to these online viewing options will be granted based on specific events or needs, with clear communication to parents regarding the procedures for viewing.
We ask for parents' understanding and support in maintaining these guidelines. The purpose of this policy is not to exclude parents, but to create a balanced and effective learning environment for all students. It is essential that students feel they can work and grow in an environment free from distraction, where they can build confidence and focus on their development. When parents are allowed to view classes, it should always be done in a manner that is respectful of the students' needs and the class structure.
If any parents have concerns or would like more information regarding our parent viewing policy, we encourage open communication with the studio administration. We are happy to discuss any special circumstances or provide clarification about how our policies contribute to the overall success of our students. By working together and respecting the guidelines we’ve set, we can ensure that all students have the best possible experience at Emily Howard Training, enabling them to flourish both as dancers and individuals.
